Integrity of the Ovens

Dear Cavalli,

We chose you as the place to debut our Pizza Club t-shirts. You were also our first foray into dessert pizza at Pizza Club. You have very delicious pizza. But what the fuck is your deal about taking pictures? "Integrity of the ovens" my ass. This is a picture from YOUR website.

Love,
Pizza Club

But really, it was a good time and I enjoyed it a great deal once we found it. Seriously, Google Maps, what the hell? Also, randomly shutting down Iphone didn't help when I could have really used the GPS...what the hell, Steve Jobs? I'm all about calling people out in this extra-confrontational PC blog post! I don't care WHO's toes I step on!

Every place so far has had a different pizza size situation which is challenging. We started scoping out other people's pizzas (are you down with OPP?) and one table had one huge pizza and the other table had two tiny pizzas but only one size is indicated on the menu. Confusing! We figured it out because we are fucking pros at pizza portions for a four person Pizza Club at this point.

The crust is really good. A little thin in the middle for my liking but that is apparently the very legit way of making it. Italy would tell me to go fuck myself. This is where I get tired of people's intense focus on "authenticity"...it's good to acknowledge what's legit and not but what is most important is if it tastes good to you. I think this is the difference between saying "Ugg this is gross, it's like a cracker, why can't they make it like Pappa Johns?!" and "I hear this is the a very authentic way of making pizza but my preference is for a slightly doughier crust."

The sauce was very vibrant, I noticed it especially on the Bismark, that egg, ham, and tomato sauce combined made pure magic. The cheese was not terribly noticeable but that seems to be the deal with this kind of pizza so I'm used to it being very minimal. EXCEPT in the case of the pizza that supposedly had smoked mozzarella, I expected that to stand out but it didn't so that pizza just didn't transcend like I had hoped.

Clams didn't bring enough CLAM! to be as exotic as I had hoped but it was still really tasty. Prosciutto and Arugula was fine but a little dry with no sauce...it was just a'ight for me. But it did serve as a refreshing break from the cheesy sauciness, like a salad with crust. Dessert pizza was good but really rich, I only tasted the rummy sugarness when I ate it after it had cooled. The first piece when it was hot was all just gooey chocolate.

So I would say...
Clams Casino (clams, bacon): A-
Bismark (ham, egg): A+
Salami and Mushroom (with "smoked mozzarella"): B
Prosciutto and Arugula: B-
Pizza Babba (Nutella, dark chocolate, "rum" and sugar) B+

BYOB went well, I enjoyed the beer we brought. I enjoy beer because there is less pouring. There is a good chance I will spill it while I pour it into my mouth so it just adds to the chances that my clumsy ass will spill it if I have to pour my drink into my glass myself. I enjoy the spout on my boxed wine for this reason.

Well, this is embarassing.

Last week's Pizza Club was canceled due to illness (official diagnoses: "belly blurbs") so just take what I wrote and apply it to next Wednesday. Still excited about Cavalli; we must also remember that this place is BYOB like the last place. For many years, I didn't drink very often and never really worried about the alcohol-serving policies of restaurants but now I've become accustomed to drinking something adult with my pizza and BYOB is a much preferable option in terms of saving money. Also, now that I drink more often, I may live forever according to this article.

In other pizza news, I really enjoy Weight Watcher's Smart Ones Pizza Minis. In addition to Jack in the Box egg rolls, these Pizza Minis are what keep me alive when I'm working late. We also ate a frozen pizza from Tom Thumb the other night. Matt had the smart idea to buy a plain cheese pizza because we already had pepperoni so we were able to feel like we sort of created something. Sad!
